Groundwater worldwide is being drained faster than it naturally recharges.
Groundwater in Movement was a submission for the HeadsUP! Times Square Visualization Challenge, organised by Visualizing.org. The challenge called for a motion graphic for the TS2 signs in New York City’s Times Square to raise awareness of pressing global issues.
The main animation vividly illustrated water gain and loss worldwide between 2002 and 2011, based on data from NASA’s GRACE satellites, transforming complex scientific information into a an impactful visualisation of our planet’s shrinking groundwater reserves.
