Based on a previous project "Migrant Moving Money", this interactive visualization shows remittance flows between countries.
In this version the country layout around the circle gives a more direct idea on the proportion of money sent or received.
For the redesign html5/svg/javascript have been used, together with the
D3.js library (chord layout)

This project is a submission for the
Best City Contest 2012.
Based on the existing EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) liveability index, the question was to create a new index adding other relevant factors and to create a visualization.
The project has received an honourable mention.

Almost all over the world groundwater in aquifers is being drained faster than the natural recharge.
"Groundwater in movement" is a submission for
HeadsUP! Times Square Visualization Challenge consisting in creating a motion graphic on the TS2 signs in NYC's Times Square. The motion graphic should alert people to current groundwater trends.
The approach of the submission is based on giving an overview of the global situation and trends while playing special attention to the local situation in critical areas.
This was achieved by presenting a global water mass change visualization in one of the signs and switching between different critical areas on the other signs, focussing in this way on the different reasons for groundwater depletion.
The project has received a Honorable Mention award.

Looking at wealth inequality in the world, migration and remittances can be seen as a spontaneous process of trying to get more balance in the world.
Remittances (money sent home by immigrants) are particular initiatives which all together have in some cases a (notable) influence in the country's GDP and are therefore contributing to poverty alleviation. In many countries remittances are even more important than external financing.
"Migrants moving money" shows the global movements of money due to remittances.
The original project was a submission for the Apps for Development competition organized by the World Bank (working together with Trudy Davis).
The project was redesigned in June 2011 to include data on remittances flows estimates.

Ecsite is the European network of science centres and museums, linking science communication professionals in more than 400 institutions in 50 countries.
We redesigned and developed Ecsite website and Ecsite Conference website (based on Drupal) and improved and expanded its functionality.
One of the main features is the members directory where it's possible to search members. Ecsite members are able to create their own profile, add news and events related to their institution and access a protected area.
For the conference website we created the possibility for users to participate suggesting conference sessions and ideas. We created an administration section to support the whole conference preparation process including the archiving of past conference sessions.

PlayDecide is a discussion game to talk in a simple and effective way about controversial issues.
We designed and built a platform (based on Drupal) to let people create and download "decide kits". These decide kits consist on sets of cards which mainly provide information about the game subject and describe different points of view.
Once created, the decide kits can be translated into different languages and are made accessible to other users. The decide kits can then be downloaded in pdf format. The game is played offline in groups of 4 to 8 people and consists on a conversation on the kit subject after which people is required to vote for different policies. The results of the game can be uploaded and are visible on PlayDecide website.

The Personal World Map has been developed with the idea of giving users another perception of the world. Normally we measure distances between places in km (or miles) but in the Personal World Map these distances have been replaced by travel time and travel costs. These two factors can give a better indication of relative position between places than geographical distances.
More information about the Personal World Map can be found in the
about section of the project.
The Personal World Map has been my final project for the study

The Atlas Demonstrator is a prototype for the project "Atlas Leefomgeving" initiated by VROM (Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment - The Netherlands). This project aims making environmental information available on-line. Most of this information is geographical and is provided by municipalities, provinces and other environmental institutions using WMS techniques.
Taking the ideas developed during the project "Leefomgeving Demonstrator" (see below) as starting point, we were asked to extend the concept adding additional functionality and to design an interface for the Demonstrator. Our activities included information and interaction design.

Thinking about
travel time as a more effective indication of
distance, the traject visualizations show the effects of highway congestion on travel time.
The project consists of three interactive animations. In the first animation distances on highway trajects have been replaced by travel times during all working days of one week. A second animation shows an overlap of travel times during Monday and Friday, while in the last one total travel times between the cities have been represented (during the mentioned period).
The data used have been provided by the client and consist of average travel times during 2005.
My activities consisted on concept development and realization.

The "Leefomgeving Demonstrator" is part of the project 'Geoloketten' where different Dutch geographic information providers came together to find a way to make geoinformation accessible to the public.
We were asked to develop a concept and design an interface for a demonstrator following the requirements coming from previously performed user research.
Different sessions with the Geoloketten group were arranged to discuss the possibilities and define the functionality of the Demonstrator.
The results of the project were later integrated in the "Atlas Demonstrator" (see above)

The New Towns Database is an initiative of the "International New Town Institute" to concentrate all information regarding "new towns". It is a growing database which includes information about the foundation and development of the towns as well as maps and images.
The towns are visualized on a world map, through an interactive animation it is possible to see the year in which the towns were founded. This map serves as interface to the new towns database.
My activities included database and interface design and development as well as the development of an interface for updating the database.

For the thematic project "Mapping Human Violence" (
MA Media Design at the Piet Zwart Institute) I developed a prototype for an interface to view images of conflicts. The idea was to show the contrast between aerial views (representing power) and the impotence of human perspective. Access to the images database should both be possible through a world map and a timeline. The timeline has a double purpose: the upper part allows access to the conflicts by year while the under part allows access to the history of remote sensing applied to conflicts. In the prototype developed for this project only access through the world map is possible.
